Citroën to launch value-oriented C-line as part of brand reorganization



A report in Autocar says that PSA Peugeot-Citroën is realigning its brands. Peugeot will take the top slot to fight in the "premium mainstream" segment; in other words, Volkswagen. Citroën is said to be pointing its spear at a space that has Ford above and Dacia below, while its "DS arm" is classified as "near premium," but it isn't clear how high its aspirations climb. The entry-level point will be occupied by a C-line to be introduced by Citroën that would be "a balance between cost and functionality" and will take cues from the Lacoste concept shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show (seen above).

The company has split its design studio into halves, one side for DS, the other for the C-line. The C-line's philosophy will be "bold" styling outside with "ease of use and simplicity" everywhere else. Build options will be kept low in order to maintain profits and low prices, but the options sheet won't be bare. The first offering in the line could be shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and will preview the replacement for the C3.

If you’re into cars, chances are you will also find other types of vehicles interesting – even vans, whether they are front-, mid- or rear-engined, big or small. However, when checking out a van, one needs to look at things from a different perspective compared to the way they normally do when dealing with regular cars.

I have tried (and hopefully succeeded) in putting together a selection of vehicles that will hopefully make the concept of an interesting van clearer, as each of our nominees has been added to the list because they portray one or more traits that make them unique or special in some way.

Scroll down, and if you think that I may have missed one or more vehicle you think should be included, do comment and upload a photo of your chosen ride, be that delivery vans, step vans, minibuses or passenger models.

Citroën H Van, Type H, H-Type or HY

Vans-1Up first we have Citroen’s unique HY van which has an unmistakable shape (especially if you’ve watched the French movie Haute Tension – spoiler alert, it’s the killer’s car), emphasized by the use of corrugated metal, which adds its own touch of coolness, as well as some structural rigidity. The HY was a real parts bin operation, borrowing its engine and gearbox from the Traction Avant, while the headlights and speedo were lifted straight out of the 2CV. It was quite prolific too, staying in production for 34 years, from 1947 to 1981.




Renault Estafette

Vans-3Staying in France, we have the Renault Estafette, which has a droopy face that only a delivery man would love. It was made between 1959 to 1986, not only in its home country, but also in Romania, Algeria and Mexico. Renault pulled it from its official lineup in 1980, when it was replaced by the much more modern Traffic. Also, like the Citroen HY, it sold around half-a-million examples.



1965 – 1978 Ford Transit

Vans-5The Ford Transit really needs no introduction. The more modern ones are very common in Europe, but it’s the 1965 to 1978 model that is easily the coolest. Already in its second generation by ’65, it had American van-inspired styling, which set it apart from its rivals. In addition, boosting its cool factor were the V4 engines it was offered with, which came in 1.7- and 2.0-liter flavors, and according to Top Gear, which quoted British police sources at the time, 95 percent of all vehicle-related robberies in the UK of the 1970s were made in a Transit.



Mercedes-Benz TN/T1

Vans-6Very popular throughout Europe, and best known for its roles as rapid response vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz T1 entered active duty in 1977, and by the time it was replaced by the T1N, close to 1 million were made. In fact, it’s still being made today, under license by Force Motors of India – they call it the Traveller.



Volkswagen T1/Type 2

Vans-7The first generation of Volkswagen’s famous van and the most visually interesting of all, the T1 or Type 2 as it was also known, began its life in 1950, using the basic running gear and engine of a Beetle. This made it different to the first two vans we featured here, as those were both front-engined and front-wheel drive, whereas this was the exact opposite of that, since it also borrowed its basic layout from the People’s Car. First associated with the hippie movement in the 1960s, the T1 was seen as a more utilitarian vehicle elsewhere around the world, and for the Brazilian market, it made so much sense that they’re only just now taking it out of production there, on December 31, 2013.



Ford E-Series

1961 Ford EconolineThis is another historic van, whose history almost mirrors that of the European Transit, but set to a Stateside background – the Ford E-Series. Introduced in 1961 as the Econoline, it too was based on a passenger car, like its Euro counterpart, and featured quirky styling. Now in its fourth generation, the American Ford van has been in production for 21 years, but now it’s at the end of the road, and about to be replaced by a vehicle tested by robots.



Chevy/GMC G-Series Vans

Vans-9The G-Series has never been the most inviting of vehicles to look at, regardless of which badge it wore (Chevrolet or GMC), but it was appreciated for its practical qualities, because, after all, it is purpose-built. Driven by everybody from park stalkers to the CIA and FedEx workers, it was built from 1964 to 1996 to serve a wide array of needs. It is its versatility that made it a commercial success, I think.



GAZelle Van

Vans-10This is the GAZelle, from Russia, and if we take a random selection of car crash videos, we’re bound to see a few of these cutting people off, flipping over or even grinding guardrails on the highway… Launched in 1994, it underwent a major restyling in 2003, but the same basic structure remained underneath, and in 2010 it was updated again. This vehicle has no real noteworthy qualities over any other van on the market, but we thought that since these are so common in our offbeat Russian videos that it would be good to let people not familiar with it know what it is.



Mazda Bongo (First-Gen)

Vans-11There is no way you cannot like the first-gen Mazda Bongo, due to its precious styling and lovable oh-so Japanese face. Built by Mazda from 1966 to 1975, it was available in a variety of body styles, none of which could match the passenger van variant for visual appeal. It was also pretty advanced for its day, with a 782 cc engine at the rear and a transaxle gearbox with specially low gears. It was reportedly able to carry over half a ton, despite being close to kei car proportions.

Subaru Sambar (van model based on 360 kei car)

Vans-12The Subaru Sambar, based on the pocket-sized 360 kei car of the 1960s, is another van we can include in the cute faced Japanese category. It too has a lovable face and small dimensions, as if it had been specially made to appeal to the side of us that likes puppies, bubbles and rainbows. This applies for the first two generations, with a production span starting in 1961 and ending in 1973, when the dreaded plastic was added, and the design flair was gone.

Spy Shots: 1.6 turbo for the Citroen C5 in China

Spy shots showing the Citroen CS5 sedan testing in China with a 1.6 turbo under the bonnet. The new engine is expected to debut on the Guangzhou Auto Show in November and it will be launched on the China car market just before the end of this year.



The Citroen C5 is made in China by the Dongfeng-PSA joint venture. Price starts at 176.900 yuan and ends at 298.900 yuan. Power comes from three: a 2.0 with 147hp, a 2.4 with 171hp, and a 3.0 V6 with 220hp.



The 1.6 turbo delivers 163hp and 240nm, mated to a six-speed automatic. As for now the new engine is an addition to the line-up, not a replacement. Many Chinese car buyers still prefer bigger engines because big = good, no matter if they use more petrol and make the world a yet dirtier place.

Intr-adevar, Citroën DS5 e o masina buna, am un amic care o conduce de peste un an si nu a avut nicio problema cu ea

Motiv: Te rugam ca atunci cand citezi pe cineva, sa nu mai folosesti intreaga postare (cateodata chiar cu poze), ci sa pastrezi numai pasajele care au legatura cu ce postezi tu, altfel umplem paginile aiurea si devin greu de urmarit. Multumim!

Rare in the US: Low Mileage Citroen BX GT for Sale in Florida

Citroen kept trying to recapture the glamor and stately, presidential demeanor of the classic DS in all of their subsequent large cars, up until the days of the XM, which for those familiar with the brand, was the last of the proper big Citroens. They sold many much more affordable models over the years too, and while many weren’t really that successful, the angular Marcello Gandini-designed BX was a very unique proposition in the 1980s.

It tried to bring a bit of that DS flavor, but unlike many models before it, the BX was built with a different philosophy. It continued to offer the brand’s clever hydropneumatic suspension, but if you so choose, it could be had in a noticeably stiffer setup than you’d normally expect in a Citroen, in the GTI models that shared their engines with the Peugeot 205 GTI (both the 1.6- the 1.9-liter units). That had a proper body kit, sports seats and with the bigger engine equipped proper performance too, for the day at least.

There was also an in-between GT model, which had a detuned version of the 1.9-liter petrol engine, and did away with the stiffer suspension. It came with 104 hp and a five-speed manual box for the driver to stir at will. Very few, if any, Citroen BX models were imported into the US (none officially), and since GT models are rarer in Europe as well, it’s a safe bet to say that the same applies to the US, but to an even greater extent.

That’s why this example, which is for sale in Florida looks like a nice deal for a unique European car that, you can also drive every day and turn heads in. People will look not because it’s particularly pretty, or that special in any way (compared to other older Citroen models), but it is interesting and looks to be in very good condition. The seller says in the eBay ad that it’s the only GT trim model in the whole of the US. I say that’s a big claim, but the car is still worth a look.

If you do end up buying it or something similar, don’t come running back to us when one of the car’s many complicated hydraulic and electrical systems go wrong, though… It may be cheap, but it’s definitely a specialist car, and specialist help in the US doesn’t come by cheaply…

Citroen Teases Touchy Cactus Concept for Frankfurt, May Preview New Supermini

Here's the first teaser for Citroen's new concept car for the speedily approaching Frankfurt Motor Show. It's named the Cactus, and if the name rings a bell, congratulations for your keen memory, as the French brand had displayed a Cactus-C concept at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show.

For the time being and until September 5, when Citroen will provide initial details and possibly a gallery of images of the new Cactus Concept, all we get is a profile photo of the front end, the design of which looks like it follows in the lines of the new C4 Picasso, and a video showing an "Air Bump" button.

It had been previously reported that the original Cactus-C study would inspire a new model codenamed E3 for a successor of sorts to the C3 in the supermini segment with a more affordable price. It is possible that the new Cactus concept previews this model.

PSA Peugeot Citroën inaugure une nouvelle usine en Chine et lance la DS5...

- Inauguration de l'usine DS à Shenzhen en Chine, d'une capacité de 200 000 véhicules/an
- Lancement commercial de la DS5 produite localement

Philippe Varin, Président du Directoire de PSA Peugeot Citroën, a inauguré samedi 28 septembre une nouvelle usine à Shenzhen dans la province du Guangdong en Chine. Il s'agit de la première usine opérée par "Changan PSA Automobile Co., Ltd" (CAPSA), la joint venture du Groupe avec le constructeur chinois "China Changan Automobile Group". Elle va permettre à CAPSA de produire 200 000 véhicules par an.

La joint venture disposera également d'un centre de R&D, dont la construction a débuté en juillet 2013 et pour lequel CAPSA a investi au total 500 millions de RMB. Ses ingénieurs travailleront en étroite collaboration avec le China Tech Center, le centre de R&D du Groupe installé à Shanghai.

L'usine de Shenzhen, référence mondiale pour sa compacité, sa haute technologie et son Système d'Excellence, va produire la DS5 dans sa version chinoise, dévoilée au Salon de Chengdu le 30 août dernier et qui représente le fer de lance de la marque DS en Chine.

Depuis l'ouverture en mars 2013 à Shanghai du "DS World", vitrine institutionnelle de la marque, le réseau commercial progresse rapidement : il compte 34 "DS Stores" à la fin du mois de septembre. Le Groupe se fixe comme objectif l'ouverture de 18 implantations supplémentaires d'ici la fin de l'année afin de couvrir les 40 villes les plus importantes du pays. Après les commercialisations successives des DS5, DS4 puis DS3 importées, CAPSA entame donc une nouvelle page de son histoire avec la commercialisation de la DS5 produite localement.

Dongfeng examining PSA's alliance proposal

China's Dongfeng has announced it is examining documents that outline the terms of a potential alliance with France's PSA Peugeot-Citroën but it is far from making a decision on the matter.

“We indeed received information from investment banks regarding PSA and we are doing preliminary research on it,” confirmed Song Hefeng, a member of Dongfeng's legal team. “We have not come up with a conclusion yet - we're far from reaching that point.”


Earlier this month, Peugeot asked two unnamed investment banks to study the impact an alliance with Dongfeng would have on its sales and revenues as a last-ditch effort to lower its dependence on the European car market. Two options are under consideration: The first would require Dongfeng to buy part of PSA, while the second would lead to the creation of a joint-venture for the development of new models and new technology aimed largely at emerging markets.

Dongfeng is not the only party deciding whether or not the project comes to life. General Motors owns a seven percent stake in PSA and has the right to sell its shares without giving prior notice or facing penalties if a third party buys ten percent or more of PSA.

The French government will likely be forced to inject cash into PSA if Dongfeng rejects the alliance proposal.

Citroen DS X7 SUV will hit the China car market in late 2014

The Citroen DS X7 SUV will be launched on the China car market in late 2014. The DS X7 is the production version of the DS Wild Rubis that debuted in April on the Shanghai Auto Show. The production version will debut on the April 2014 Beijing Auto Show.

The Citroen DS X7 SUV is based on the Citroen DS5, it will be made in China by the Chang’an-PSA joint venture. Production of the China-made DS5 started in early July, it will hit the Chinese car market later this month. The DS X7 SUV will be powered by the same 163hp 1.6 turbo as the DS5.

Citroen C-Quatre is matte blue in China

A very sleek Citroen C-Quatre sedan, seen on the Wufang Tianya Automobile Parts City in east Beijing. The good vehicle was wrapped in a matte blue wrap and slightly sexed up further by LED-strips in the lower grille. The wrap was of mediocre quality but matched nicely with the license plates, and was neatly extended over the bumpers and mirrors.

Big wing at the back for down force! Alloys are sadly bog standard, should have been in gold.

The Citroen C-Quatre is a China-only mid-size sedan based on the first generation Citroen C4. It is still in production, made in China by the Dongfeng-PSA joint venture. Price starts at 107.800 yuan and ends at 129.800 yuan. Power comes from 1.6 and 2.0 liter engines.

Peugeot CEO willing to step aside for China

The might of the largest Chinese car companies is growing in a ever faster pace. The latest example is Dongfeng Motor, which is considering the purchase of a large stake in troubled PSA Peugeot Citroen, but only if Chief Executive Philippe Varin leaves the company first. PSA has already started interviewing candidates to replace Varin, after Chinese partner Dongfeng said a deeper alliance should be accompanied by management change.

Varin himself is leading the hunt for a successor who has the calibre and experience to head a global carmaking alliance – qualities that Dongfeng has emphasised when discussing a capital tie-up and expanded industrial cooperation, according to two sources.

“The request regarding the succession came from Philippe Varin with the agreement of the supervisory board. The aim is to ensure the long-term continuation of the strategy Varin is leading,” said a third source close to the matter.

The source said an announcement was expected shortly.

After speaking at an industry conference in Berlin on Saturday, Varin declined to comment on a report in Le Figaro that the troubled carmaker may hire former Renault chief operating officer Carlos Tavares as his new second-in-command.

“I am sorry, I have a plane to catch,” he told reporters.

Tavares’s nomination has won the backing of senior Peugeot officials including Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux, chairman of the board’s appointments committee, and is likely to be announced within days, Le Figaro said in a second report on Sunday.

Peugeot and Dongfeng are in talks to build on their existing Chinese joint venture with cooperation in other markets and a multi-billion-euro share issue that would see Dongfeng and the French government acquire stakes in the French carmaker, sources familiar with the matter have said.

Peugeot, one of the carmakers worst-hit by Europe’s six-year market slump, is cutting French jobs and plant capacity as it struggles to halt losses within two years.

Even then it will lack the financial clout and industrial scale to compete globally on its own. Varin has acknowledged that Peugeot will need new partners and fresh capital to support future vehicle and technology investments.

DEEPER PARTNERSHIP

Varin, 61, joined Peugeot from Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus in 2009 and has steered the company through the worst of the European crisis. But his support for a deeper tie-up with 7 percent shareholder General Motors (GM) or Dongfeng has led to bouts of tension with members of the founding Peugeot family, which would lose control of the company in the planned capital hike.

The company is now seeking to raise as much as 4 billion euros ($5.4 billion) in the share issue, newspaper Le Monde said earlier this week.

Dongfeng Chairman Xu Ping sees Renault’s 14-year-old alliance with Nissan as a model for the deeper partnership under discussion with Peugeot, said a source familiar with the Chinese carmaker’s thinking.

“But they wonder whether there’s an executive capable of running a Dongfeng-PSA alliance the way (Renault CEO) Carlos Ghosn has transformed Nissan,” the source said.

Tavares, 55, began his career at Renault in 1981 and moved to Nissan 23 years later as a programme director before going on to hold senior alliance roles such as chief of Nissan Americas, culminating with his stint as Ghosn’s deputy at Renault.

Tavares, who could not be reached on Saturday, left Renault abruptly in August after saying publicly he would like to lead another carmaker. Inconclusive press reports have since linked him to high-level openings such as the CEO’s job at luxury sports carmaker Aston Martin, succeeding Ulrich Bez.

Citroen teases the China-only Citroen DS 5LS sedan

New teasers of a new Citroen DS sedan for the China car market. When the first teaser came out it was widely assumed, including by us, to show the upcoming Citroen DS4 sedan that is currently under development in China. However, new reports indicate the teasers are teasing another sedan, called DS 5LS, and based on the Citroen DS5.



The Citroen DS 5LS sedan will debut on December 19 on the Paris Auto Show in France. China-debut is scheduled for the Beijing Auto Show in April next year, and it will be launched on the China car market around the same time. The DS 5LS sedan will be made in China by the Changan-PSA joint venture. No confirmation about engines yet but Chinese media say one of the power plants will be the 163hp 1.6 liter turbo that powers so many other China-made Citroens and Peugeots.

Citroen teases China-only DS4 sedan

Citroen has released a teaser of the upcoming China-only Citroen DS4 sedan. The teaser shows a flashy headlight. Citroen says design of the DS4 sedan is inspired by the Citroen DS Wild Rubis concept car. The Citroen DS4 sedan will be launched on the China car market in March 2014. Price will start around 180.000 yuan.

Earlier spy shots of the Citroen DS4 sedan. It will be made in China by the Changan-PSA joint venture. The DS4 sedan is basically the same car as the equally China-only Citroen C4L, which is made in China by the Dongfeng-PSA joint venture.

The DS4 sedan will get the typical DS-treatment to make it look more up-market car so Citroen can charge more money for it. The DS4 sedan will get a DS front with the teased head lights, a DS-sed interior, different rear lights, and those coolio DS-badges.

The DS4 sedan will be powered by a 1.6 turbo in two different configurations: 163hp and 200hp. The Citroen C4L is also available with a naturally aspirated 117hp 1.6 but the DS sedan won’t get that engine, as it is considered too cheapish for the DS range.

Citroen DS5 Golden Pearl debuts at the 2013 Guangzhou Auto Show
This is the new Citroen DS5 Golden Pearl, it debuted today on the 2013 Guangzhou Auto Show. The Citroen DS5 Golden Pearl is a concept previewing a super luxurious variant of the China-made Citroen DS5. The name refers to the Pearl River that flows through Guangzhou city. The Golden Pearl is painted in matte gold with red touches and stands on racy wheels with speedy matte silver alloys. The interior however, is even better.
The whole inside is clad in ebony wood and calfskin leather, making for a very impressive cabin. Even the leather around the gear lever is completely made out of calfskin. The steering wheel is a stunning piece of art by its own right. Thick carpets are made of wool.
The passengers in the back can enjoy the sunshine via a giant sunroof.
And there is another targa-like sunroof at the front, operated by an aircraft-style control panel.
Whether the Citroen DS5 Golden Pearl will even become reality is an open question, but we sure hope so. The roads of the world are already so full with dull brown cars, this slightly mad and very special Citroen can kick a bit of ass.
She pretty, but her trousers are too cheap-astronaut.
